How do I treat and Paint exterior walls that are flaking?
Three challenges people encounter when painting their house or buildings include
How to treat algae - this is explained in out How to Remove Algae post
Where to start - we’ll that again
How to paint peeling walls which we cover in our 7 step guide below
It’s that time of year where the long bright evenings are almost upon us. This time of year often inspires many to paint the exterior of their house. With this in mind we decided to create a 7-step guide to treating and painting exterior walls that are flaking or peeling
Step 1 - use a scraper to remove all of the loose and flaking paint
Step 2 - take out a wire brush and wire brush the area that was peeling or flaking. It’s better to wire brush more of the area than required rather than taking a gamble and removing too little
Step 3 - use a stabilising solution - all leading paint brands have their own version. Apply the stabilising solution to the area you scraped back and wire bushed
Step 4 - once the stabilising solution is dry we suggest apply stabilising solution to all of the walls, plinths, cills etc that need to be painted as it binds everything together and means there’s a good surface to paint over
Step 5 - fill all holes with a suitable exterior filler and all cracks with caulk
Step 6 - spot coat all of the filler and caulk before you start painting
Step 7 - begin to paint the walls by starting to cut in from the top down
Step 8 - once the first coat is dry apply the second coat
Step 9 - once the walls are painted continue paint any trims like reveals, cills and plinths
