How to Remove Algae?
As we are now into springtime in Ireland and the summer is quickly approaching we decided to write a quick blog on algae.
What is algae?
Algae is the green residue that is seen on external walls and cills. It is often seen on the roof of a conservatory or on roof lights
Why is it a Problem?
Algae become a problem when you decide to repaint the exterior of your house. If you do not clean the algae off prior to painting to paint with only sit on the areas where the algae is present. As a result the paint will fail pretty quickly.
How can you treat algae?
The best solution for treating algae is applying a fungicide wash to the effected areas. A fungicide wash can be applied by brushing it on or by spraying it on with a water spray bottle just like the one you’d use to water the flower in your garden with.
After you have applied the fungicide wash it needs to dry and once dried it need to be wash down with clean soapy water followed by being hosed down.
You will notice once you have completed this step that the walls will look much cleaner than before you started
What next?
Once all of the algae has been removed it is possible to paint the exterior of your house. We suggest using all conventional methods when painting the exterior of your house such as
scraping back any loose or flaking material
applying a stabilising solution to seal any raw render
applying two coats of a good quality trade approved exterior emulsion
