What Effects the Cost of a Painting Estimate?
We price lots of projects and some clients ask what effects the cost of painting estimate. We thought we would do a quick blog to highlight some of the factors that increase or indeed reduce the cost of painting.
The factors that increase the cost of painting include
1 - Working outside or normal working hours
Normal working hours are deemed to be 8:00am through to 4:30pm Monday through to Friday. Some clients ask us to paint their offices, retail units or workplaces outside of these hours. By outside of these hours we mean working in the evening time, at night or over the weekend. Completing painting work outside of normal working hours generally increases the price by 40% of the original quotation
2 - The Colour
Repainting a building the same colour is the most cost effective because if the building is in relatively good condition it less time consuming.
If a client selects a dark colour - the paint is more expensive to buy as the paint is made up in a “dark base”. Purchasing paint made up in a dark base can be up to 50% more expensive than buying painting in a white/ light base
Colours like light blues and mint green are made up in pastel bases. Pastel bases generally have the worst body and require a minimum of 3 coats to cover. Therefore choose a colour from a pastel base is 50% more labour intensive as 3 coats is required rather than 2 coats
3 - Furniture, Personal Belongings and Fixtures
An excessive amount of furniture, belongings of fixtures increases the cost of painting because painters needed to allow for the moving and covering of these items. If a client choose to move all small items and fixtures like notice boards, signs and pictures from walls painter decorators can start painting immediately therefore there is less time involved reducing the price
5 - The Paint
The type of paint has a massive effect on the cost of painting. For example 5L of Little Greene paint is approx €110.00 whereas 5L of Dulux Vinyl Matt is approx €27.50. A standard room like a double bedroom in a semi detached house in suburbia would required 5L of paint to paint the walls. The cost to paint that room increase by €82.50 if Little Greene paint is favoured over Dulux
