DIY Tips: How do you Paint a Wall?

Painting walls is the easy and fun part of what we do as painters!

We compiled a set of 7-steps to help you paint your walls and achieve that professional look!

1 - Put Down Dust Sheets

Be sure to put sheets down. It is worth buying or borrowing a few good sheets and it will protect your floors and furniture if you have any spillages! Plastic sheets are great for covering bulky items like furniture and wall hung TVs.

3 - Rub the Walls Down

Use sandpaper to rub the walls down. There are lots of different types of sandpaper available. We suggest using a 120 grit sandpaper. Be sure to rub down every inch of the walls.

3 - Fill the Walls

When it comes to filling the walls there are two products that you will need. Wall filler and caulk. There are lots of brands of wall filler but we suggest using Toupret filler.

You will use filler on the flat of the wall to fill any holes or cracks. You will use the caulk to fill the joints where the walls meet, behind the architraves and the tops of the skirtings.

4 - Cut the Walls in

This means paint around the edges first. To cut the walls in you will need a step ladder.

Start off by cutting in the the top of wall and work your way down to the bottom so as add the edges such as around light switches and light sockets are painted before you start to roll the walls.

5 - Touch Up the Filler

Once the walls are cut in and before you start using your roller touch up the filler using your paint brush.

6 - Roll the Walls

Use your roller and extension pole to roll the walls. We always advise to take your time, apply lots of paint and aim to achieve a smooth coat

7 - Second Coat the Walls

Once you have successfully completed steps 1 - 6 and the walls are dry repeat the process when you are second coating the walls.

Don’t forget to give the walls another light rub down. Spot fill the walls if necessary too before you start cutting in!
