How to Paint Wardrobe Doors?
Painting wardrobes is a cost effective way to transform your existing wardrobe and give your bedroom a new look. In this post we are going to talk through the steps involved to paint your wardrobes
Step 1
Remove the doorhandles and put them away for safe keeping
Step 2
Clean the wardrobe doors, frames and sides in sugar soap. Sugar soap removes any dust or grease on the doors that might prevent the paint from drying
Step 3
Some wardrobes have a vinyl covering which is placed on top of the timber. For example cream coloured wardrobes or press doors generally have a vinyl covering to give them that cream colour. If you notice some of this lifting around the edges it’s possible to stick it back with glue
Step 4
It’s important to prime any wardrobe or door that has not been previously painted. Here as Lally our painters always use a shellac based primer. We generally use one of two options. These options are a B-I-N Primer by Zinsser or PX4 by Crown Trade Paints
Step 5
Once the primer is dry the surfaces need to be rubbed down lightly with some wet and dry sandpaper. Any cracks or gaps at joints can be filled using Decorators Caulk
Step 6
Once the caulk is dry it’s possible to start painting the wardrobes. One product we always recommend using on wardrobes and doors is Colourtrend Satin Finish. Some people prefer an eggshell finsig. To find out the difference between Satin and Eggshell paint please check out our blog post
The wardrobes will need 2 or 3 coats of satin or eggshell paint. Remember to rub the surfaces down lightly with wet and dry sandpaper between coats
Step 7
Once the paint is dry the handles needed to be fitted
If choosing new handles it’s important to make sure any new holes are drilling before any painting work begins and that any holes that are no longer needed are filled up
It’s possible to up cycle old handles by painting or spraying them to give them a new look
