What Colour Should I Paint my School?

The choice of colour in our environments has a huge effect on all of us. Children, young people and pupils with additional needs all respond differently to different colours. Due to these differences we thought we would do up a quick guide on paint colours for schools ahead of the school summer works projects.

Primary School Classroom

At primary school level, primary colours are best. In a classroom environment red and blue are excellent colours to paint the wall that the interactive whiteboard hangs from. The remainder of the walls can be painted white or an off white colour. The reasons for red and blue are highlighted below

Red improves concentration and performance as it provokes action and alertness. Blue on the other hand improves memory, overall health and each pupils mood as it reduces depression. Blue also enhance creativity and promotes tranquility

Primary School Library

In a library setting a feature wall containing the colour green is best because it increase concentration

School Offices

A school office can be a daunting place for a partner, staff member or child as it may be a location they fear going or receive bad news in. As a result it is best to go with a violet shade as it conveys respect and sets a feeling of calmness

Corridors

As no formal learning takes place in a corridor there is more freedom to choose different colour. Two suggestions are advised here

1- Incorporate accents of colour from the school logo or crest

2- Incorporate a personalised mural or wall covering that is unique to the school and conveys a sense of pride and personality of the characters you hope to develop in your students during their time with you

ASD Units

Colour has a huge effect on children with additional needs. It is advised to paint the surrounds of the room i.e. the skirting boards and the architraves one shade darker than the wall colour.

In doing so it makes it easier for pupils with visual impairments or dyspraxia to define the space they occupy
